Auto 1 Trophy for the Volkswagen Tiguan

Europe’s toughest jury has made its decision: this year’s coveted Auto1 Trophy in the “Off-Roaders and SUVs” category goes to theVolkswagen Tiguan. More than 40 million readers of the 26 editions of Auto Bild voted for their favourites in six vehicle categories. The top three in each category then had to prove themselves at a test facility near Rome, where an expert jury made up of racing drivers, technicians and senior editors determined the category winners. The result: a convincing victory for the Tiguan.

Volkswagen group of America launches new microsite

HERNDON, Va. - Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. today launched responsiblemobility.com, a microsite focused on the company's sustainable mobility strategy. The new microsite comes as the Group's Audi and Volkswagen brands prepare to embark upon their 50-state clean diesel strategy, and as the Group continues work on next generation alternative energy innovations such as biofuels and high temperature fuel cells.

"We are a company with a tradition of combining the passion for driving with low fuel consumption, advanced technology, and a sense of responsibility for the future needs of our customers," said Stefan Jacoby, President and Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen Group of America. "We see the sustainable future set against a series of technology horizons. We must leverage today's technology while we continue to set our best minds to developing sustainable power trains for the future. This is something Volkswagen Group does best."

Volkswagen presents 'Park Assist Vision' at Hanover Fair

Wolfsburg - There is something decidedly fantastical about this scene: We observe the approach of a Passat estate, it stops, the driver gets out, slams the door shut and, as he walks away from the car, he aims a remote control back at it. That car now proceeds to reverse park itself into the available space, it then independently cuts the engine and activates the door locks. End of performance. In reality, there is nothing at all fantastical about this demonstration. The live performance by Volkswagen can be viewed at this year’s Hanover Fair (21 to 25 April), where the carmaker is premiering its “Park Assist Vision”, a system with the ability to guide a Passat prototype with absolute precision into a perpendicular parking space, i.e. the kind available on parking lots and in underground car parks. These parking spaces are often too narrow to allow drivers and passengers to get in and out of the car comfortably. In the not too distant future, “Park Assist Vision” will put an end to that.

Fastest ever Volkswagen lands in New Zealand

The new Passat R36 is powered by a 220 kW (300 hp) 3.6 litre six cylinder direct injection petrol engine (3.6 FSI). Power transmission is handled by a direct shift gearbox (DSG) and permanent four-wheel drive (4Motion). The top speed of the Passat R36 is electronically regulated at 250kph. In terms of speed, the Passat R36 outstrips every other Volkswagen in accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h: the sedan reaches the 100-km/h mark in 5.6 seconds (5.8 seconds for the Variant). Performance enhancements are transmitted to the road courtesy of a 25mm sports suspension system.

The new Passat R36 was conceived by “Volkswagen Individual”, the specialist vehicles division of the global giant. Following the original Golf R32 and the recently launched Touareg R50, the Passat R36 will be the third series version to be debuting under the “R” sports label. The “R32” label already represents a top-selling model; the first Golf R32 (177 kW / 241 hp) based on the fourth Golf generation and introduced in 2002, took off better than expected in every way; 14,000 cars were sold. In 2005 the second Golf R32, the Mark V version with 184 kW / 250 hp, equipped with 4Motion four-wheel drive as standard equipment, was introduced. It was also a terrific seller. And it continues to sell well today. Now, the “R36” will show how sporty a Passat Sedan and a Passat Variant can really be.

Visually, a whole range of specific features shows the new Passat R36 to be the most dynamic model. These include an R-specific front bumper with grille in a matte chrome finish, including the dual fins of the upper radiator grille. The rear of the Passat R36 sedan features a newly designed bootlid spoiler; in the case of the Passat Variant R36 a new roof edge spoiler provides additional downward force to the rear axle. Identical for both body versions are the chrome dual exhaust pipes, newly designed 18-inch “Omanyt” alloy wheels and body coloured wheel arch extensions. The signature blue painted brake callipers are another key feature.

Volkswagen Individual designed interior equipment especially for the sportiest Passat. The leather multifunction steering wheel in R design is especially slip-proof; it features an R36 logo in the lower spoke. The pedals have a stainless steel finish. In addition, as standard equipment the Passat R36 will be delivered with a sport seating system together with electric 12-way adjustment (including pneumatically adjustable side support), R36 door sill trims, new instrument lighting (white illumination) and an automatic transmission selector lever in aluminium look. Rear seat occupants are not forgotten with a sport seating system that includes seat heating.

The fastest ever production car from Volkswagen is now available in New Zealand. Standard specifications include brushed aluminium trim inserts, 8 airbags, bixenon headlights with active front lighting, keyless access and start and tyre pressure monitoring.

The Passat R36 Sedan has a RRP of $82,990 and Passat R36 Variant $85,990.

Dean Sheed, the Volkswagen General Manager for New Zealand, says that the Passat R36 has some great sports car DNA: “With icons such as Scirocco and Corrado, and of course the legendary Golf GTI and Polo GTI, Volkswagen has a proven history of producing successful sports cars. The first of the R-Series was of course, the Golf R32. In Mark V guise, the combination of a practical 5 door family hatch with sports car performance has proven to be well accepted by our customers. To date over 225 units have been delivered to customers here in New Zealand.”

On the Passat R36, Sheed commented: “The dynamic genes have been passed onto the Passat R36. The performance of a sports car has been moulded into the body of a functional Passat Sedan or Variant. True to Volkswagen’s outlook on sustainability, combined fuel consumption of 10.5L/100km and a CO2 output of 249g/km are particularly impressive considering the level of performance on offer.”

Volkswagen to launch Jetta in India

Volkswagen Jetta IndiaVolkswagen begins market introduction of the Jetta in India. The sedan – eight million of which have been sold since 1979 – will be available in three versions. At market launch the innovative 6-speed DSG dual clutch transmission will be offered. Other comfort and convenience features round out the program.

The Jetta will be offered in three equipment lines in India. For the entry level model, the Jetta 1.6 Trendline (75 kW / 102 PS), prices start at the currency equivalent of € 18,970. The Jetta 1.9 TDI Trendline (77 kW / 105 PS) is the entry-level variant for diesel engines, costing about € 21,176. The top model, the Jetta 1.9 TDI Comfortline DSG, will sell for about € 24,411.

These engine/transmission combinations, which have enjoyed worldwide success, are linked to equipment packages. Even entry-level models have features such as Climatic or Climatronic, alloy wheels, metallic paint, power mirrors and RCD 300 radio with up to 8 loudspeakers. The top version is rounded out by additional comfort, convenience and infotainment features. These include, for example, power leather seats, rain sensor, cruise control system, an extensive infotainment system (RCD 500 radio with 10 loudspeakers, CD changer, multifunctional display) and additional side airbags in the rear.

Next to the Passat, the Jetta is the second vehicle of the Volkswagen brand to be produced in the Aurangabad plant for India. The Phaeton and Touareg continue to be marketed in India. There is a continued push to expand the dealer and service infrastructure, which is an integral part of the schedule.

Volkswagen gets approval to acquire stake in Scania tax credit

The Volkswagen Group has received the antitrust approvals necessary to acquire a majority voting stake in Swedish truck manufacturer Scania AB. In addition to the approval by the European Commission, a large number of antitrust proceedings were required in other countries worldwide.

In March this year, Volkswagen reached an agreement with Investor AB and the Wallenberg foundations regarding the acquisition of their entire shareholdings in Scania. Volkswagen will therefore increase its share of voting rights in Scania from 37.98 percent to 68.60 percent. Its equity interest will rise to 37.73 percent (from 20.89 percent). The purchase price amounts to approximately EUR 2.8 billion. The Volkswagen Group will fully consolidate Scania in the second half of the year.

"We are delighted that Scania will now become the Group's ninth strong brand under the roof of Europe's largest automobile manufacturer," said Prof. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. Scania now has a clear shareholder structure, he added. "As with all of our Group brands, Scania will retain its own corporate headquarters, its own culture and its own profile," said Winterkorn.

Volkswagen launches new Golf

Volkswagen is unveiling its most important automotive secret of the year: the new Golf. The car – Europe’s most successful with more than 26 million sold – was improved in all areas. "This sixth generation of Golf cars will completely redefine the quality and comfort level of its class over broad categories, offering more customer value than ever before", says Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board at Volkswagen AG. The European market launch of the new Golf will begin in October; following in succession will be Africa, Asia, Australia andVolkswagen Golf North America. The entry price for the German market is around 16,500 Euros.Innovative power – the Golf democratizes progress:
The clear and powerful design of the new Golf is showing the entire brand the way to the future. Its acoustic properties and the overall comfort of the Volkswagen tear down class distinctions. Innovative engines and transmission technologies lower fuel consumption by up to 28 percent. All gasoline and diesel engines satisfy limits of the future EU-5 standard.

Assistance systems such as "automatic distance control" (ACC), "adaptive chassis control" (DCC) and the "park steering assistant" bring additional top technologies on board the Golf. A new ESP system, with finer response over its control range, further optimized crash properties, seven airbags including knee airbag, the special head restraints (WOKS) that counteract whiplash trauma, a "seatbelt detection" feature debuting in the rear seating area of the Golf and daytime running lights – that are standard equipment – provide for a maximum level of safety.
Exterior design – Precision in a new form:
The high value of the new Golf is reflected par excellence in its stylish design; all key body elements were redesigned: "We have cast the Golf’s core components in a precise, new mold", explains Walter de Silva. And the Italian design chief of the German corporation emphasizes this: "The Golf is the global icon car making. So the architecture and graphic form of new model are also absolutely clear and unique." At the same time, the sixth Golf has a sportier and more distinctive appearance than any previous generation of the model series. De Silva: "It is more accentuated, more three-dimensional than its predecessor; with precisely defined lines and edges, and with finely proportioned flared surfaces and recesses." And Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer for the Volkswagen brand, adds: "Every detail is uncompromisingly aimed at improving value."

Especially in a direct comparison of generations five and six, it becomes clear just how much the new Golf has changed. The team headed up by de Silva and Bischoff sought to crystallize out the "essential DNA" of the model series and send it on a trip to the future. These stylistic characteristics include the clear front end of the first generation and the C-pillar that was perfected in the fourth generation.

The roof section now rests – similar to the new Scirocco – on a dominant filled out shoulder section. Responsible for this is a prominent curving line that – like a muscle trained down to the last fiber – extends from the headlights back to the taillights. In its side profile, this line – which Volkswagen Design calls the "character line" – also gives the new Golf a fuller, lower stance on the road from a side perspective.

All body surfaces are generally more relaxed, more athletic. In front the new car takes up the horizontally aligned radiator grille trim strip between the headlights of the first Golf generation; the grille itself is high-gloss black. The lines of the bumper match those of the radiator grille. Beneath this is an adjacent section with another air scoop. Also arranged on a black background are the chrome light housings of the dynamically styled headlamps.

In the rear too is characterized by a dominance of horizontal lines. The taillights – very wide now – are identified among other things by an unmistakably unique night design. Stylistically – with their crystal-clear lines for the turn signal and backup lamps – they bear a resemblance to the taillights of the Touareg. Overall, the image of the new Golf – in the interplay of all of its design characteristics – is one of a significantly wider, flatter and even more high-end car.
Interior – imploding class distinctions:
The car’s exceptional value also applies to the newly designed interior, whose refined surfaces and features completely transform class distinctions, both to the touch and visually, especially in the cockpit area. The appearance and layout of materials and details such as brushed chrome accents and round instruments derived directly from those of the Passat CC leave the impression that one is actually sitting in a car of the next higher segment. Ergonomic properties of the car’s interior were also further developed. For example, all operating controls are even easier to use. They include the control of the automatic climate control system (Climatronic) – presented for the first time on the Passat CC – and the power window controls that are now located further forward in the door trim, making them easier to access.

There is a common thread here: Volkswagen’s typical attention to perfection of every detail in the car. Take the example of "seatbelt detection" in the rear: if the Golf is ordered with rear side airbags, the user can recognize on the multifunctional display in the cockpit whether the occupants have their seatbelts fastened in the rear – separately for each seat. Or take the example of leather seats: a new, more robust leather surface is being used. Or the example of the cargo area: four practical hooks ensure that after shopping, the contents of shopping bags are not strewn across the cargo area. Or the example of the outside mirrors: thanks to an aerodynamically optimized shape they get significantly less dirty. They are easier to adjust from the interior, since the power mirror adjustment control is now located further up and more forward in the door trim.
Noise reduction – the quietest Golf since the first model:
The new Golf is characterized by first-class acoustic properties. A special damping film in the windshield also reduces driving noises, as does the newly developed seal concept for the doors and side window guides. The new shape of the outside mirrors also significantly reduces wind noise. Furthermore, special modifications were made to acoustically isolate the engine and passenger compartments from one another better. Very quiet rolling tires and new engine bearings round out the noise reduction package.
Diesel engines – migration to common rail injection:
Making a significant contribution to the pioneering acoustic properties are the exceptionally quiet TDI common rail engines being used in the Golf for the first time. Two balancer shafts also put an end to undesirable vibrations. Plans call for a TDI power range extending from 66 kW / 90 PS to 125 kW / 170 PS. Right at the market launch, Volkswagen will be offering the Golf with two 2.0 liter TDI engines; they output 81 kW / 110 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS. Always there as production equipment: a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

The new TDIs are exceptionally fuel efficient. The 110 PS strong entry-level diesel is satisfied with 4.5 liters of fuel (119 g/km CO2) per 100 kilometers – that represents a 0.6 liter reduction! Even the 140 PS version only requires 4.9 liters of diesel (129 g/km CO2), which is 0.6 liters less.
Gasoline engines – more economical than ever before:
Four variants will define the range of gasoline engines in the launch phase: 59 kW / 80 PS, 75 kW / 102 PS, 90 kW / 122 PS and 118 kW / 160 PS. Starting at 90 kW / 122 PS, the TSI engines come with supercharger and/or turbocharger. The fact is that the gasoline engines too are pioneering when it comes to fuel economy. The optimized 80 PS entry-level engine consumes just 6.4 liters of Super per hundred kilometers (149 g/km CO2) – that is 0.5 liters less than the previous model. The other TSI engines are also taking the stage as prime examples of efficiency: at 122 PS the new Golf 1.4 TSI consumes just 6.2 liters of Super (144 g/km CO2); this yields a fuel consumption advantage of 0.1 liters. Even the new 160 PS top version of the 1.4 TSI attains an excellent value at 6.3 liters. Compared to the retired 150 PS FSI, the 160 PS TSI’s fuel consumption was even lowered by 1.6 liters.
DSG – replaces conventional automatic:
With the exception of the entry-level versions, all gasoline and diesel engines can be paired with Volkswagen’s dual clutch transmission (DSG). Depending on the engine torque, either a 6-s0eed or 7-speed DSG is used. On the Golf, the extremely efficient and agile DSG has thereby replaced the classic torque converter automatic. Just how efficient the alliance of TSI plus DSG can be is demonstrated by the average fuel consumption of the 1.4 TSI with 160 PS and 7-speed DSG: 6.0 liters (139 g/km CO2). This high-tech duo replaces the 2.0 FSI with 150 PS and 6-speed automatic. Average fuel consumption there: 8.3 liters. Savings: 2.3 liters per hundred kilometers or 28 percent – progress in its best form.

Indians to get to own Volkswagen Beetle by 2009

Indians could get to own the original people’s car - the Volkswagen Beetle - by 2009. According to Volkswagen India President and Managing Director Joerg Muller, the Beetle is expected in India after Volkswagen strengthens its dealership network in the country.
Volkswagen BeetleIt is the company’s plan to use the Beetle as a brand building tool for itself as it attempts to move into the highly competitive Indian car segment by 2010. Currently, the company plans to ship the Beetle as a completely Built Unit (CBU) from Mexico.

Alternative plans include setting up a manufacturing plant in Chakan in Maharashtra at the cost of about 580 million Euros (approximately INR 3,600 crores) from where the company will roll out the Beetle.

Currently, the company is on a dealership expansion drive. It has eight dealers currently, and plans to increase to around 15 dealers. By 2011 the company plans to acquire around 120 dealers.

Volkswagen & Audi set up new corporate sales office in Mumbai

Volkswagen Group, Europe’s largest automobile manufacturer is poised to further strengthen its Indian operations with the setting up of a new corporate sales office in Mumbai.

The new corporate sales office located at Bandra Kurla Complex will help Volkswagen and Audi in catering to its customers and dealers in India better.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Joerg Mueller, President and Managing Director Volkswagen Group India remarked, “Our Indian operations play a significant role in our overall strategy. To further strengthen the growth in India we will increase our Volkswagen and Audi dealerships across the country from 14 at present to approximately 150 by 2011. We look forward to a long-term relationship with the country.”

In 2007, Volkswagen had first introduced to the Indian market, its indigenously built Volkswagen Passat to cater to the premium automobile segment. This was followed by the recent successful launch of the Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen’s mid-sized premium car in India. Volkswagen dealerships are based in New Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and Ludhiana.

Audi entered the Indian market in 2005. The Audi model range in India includes the Audi A8, Audi Q7, Audi A6, Audi A4 and Audi TT and is available at present in seven dealerships across the country: in New Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune.

To further increase their footprints in the country Volkswagen offers its top models like the Phaeton and the Touareg as CBUs. Audi will introduce the super sports car Audi R8 to the Indian market in autumn 2008.

With this office Volkswagen Group Sales Private Limited crosses another milestone which firmly grounds it to India and displays its firm aspiration to capture the Indian automobile market.

Volkswagen to Bring its R&D Centre to India

The German car maker, Volkswagen, is planning to bring its global research and development centre to India. The centre will be set up in Pune and will eventually produce vehicles for global market. “India has a good resource of engineering talent. We will build up our technical centre at Pune. After sometime, may be in 5-6 years time, we may have global car developed in India,” Volkswagen Executive Vice-President and Member of Board Ulrich Hackenberg said at the Paris Auto Show here.

Other Car majors like Honda and Suzuki already have their research and development centres established in India. Apart from bringing its research and development centre to India, Volkswagen also plans to launch its commercial vehicles in the country. We, as a big automobile company, constantly keep evaluating possibilities. Emerging markets, including India, are key to our expansion programme not only in cars but also in commercial vehicles,” Volkswagen Group Chairman Martin Winterkorn said.

Volkswagen is currently studying the feasibility of launching commercial vehicles in India so that it can launch its LCV models in the country. It is investing 560 million Euros to set up a manufacturing unit in Chakan, near Pune. It is already bringing its compact sedan, VW Polo to India, next year. On one hand it will launch its small car Up! In India next year while on the other hand, it has its luxury model, Beetle, lined up for Indian launch as well.

Volkswagen to Launch new Polo in India

Volkswagen PoloCome 2009, and Volkswagen would lift the wraps off a new variant of its popular car, Polo. To be a competitor to Maruti’s Swift,Hyundai’s Getz and Tata Motor’s Indica, the new Polo variant will be designed and developed by Volkswagen internally for the Indian market.

The carmaker, meanwhile, inked a pact with the Maharastra government for producing
Volkswagen cars from Pune. According to a Volkswagen official, the company would go for the B segment of the passenger car market, which incidentally is the largest in the country. The company sees further growth in this segment.

Post-pact with the Maharashtra government, the auto major would acquire 230 hectares of land in Chakan at Pune. The new plant would boast of an initial capacity of 110,000 units by 2009. The company is expected to invest around Rs 2,450 crore for the plant.

Further, according to reports, the car maker will also roll out its Passat model , which will don a price tag of Rs 30 lakh . The Passat would be rolled out of the Skoda Auto manufacturing facility at Aurangabad by mid-2007. Skoda officials, in the meanwhile, added that it would double production at Aurangabad from 12,000 units to 25,000 by next fiscal. He facility would manufacture
Volkswagen cars and look for few models from the Audi stable.

Volkswagen Beetle to be Launched Soon in India

Volkswagen is all set to roll out the Volkswagen Beetle on the Indian roads, in the beginning of December this year. As per information provided by a senior company official, Volkswagen Beetle was meant to be a People's car, but its very high prices fail to live up to that. Volkswagen would import the Beetle as 'Completely Built Unit (CBU)' with a 110 per cent import duty from its Mexican plant, for sale in Indian markets.
Volkswagen Beetle IndiaVolkswagen is Europe's largest carmaker which already sells the Volkswagen Jetta andVolkswagen Passat sedans and the Touareg SUV in India. The Volkswagen owns Skoda and Porsche vehicles which have already done good sales in India. The group has two facilities in India at Aurangabad and Chakan which assemble cars of its three brands,SkodaAudi and Volkswagen.

Talking about the proposed launch, a couple of months back,
Volkswagen India(Passenger car) Board of Directors, Member Neeraj Garg told reporters "It is an iconic brand and people know more about the car than Volkswagen. It will be brought to India as a completely built unit." At that time, he failed to put any time line for the launch of Beetle, but indicated that it is certainly considering using the 'Beetle' as a brand building strategy for Volkswagen, in order to get into the competitive Indian compact segment.

The
Volkswagen Beetle is amongst the most successful models ever produced by the German carmaker. According to the critics, the car is a complete failure due to its peculiar styling, underpowered motor, rough ride and noisy engine. Despite these claims, the car has bucked all trends and made history.

The company as a whole is also expanding in India, by increasing its target. The group earlier announced a target of 8-10 per cent share of the Indian passenger
car market in the next 6 years. In the meanwhile, the new Volkswagen Polo is expected to hit the market early next year, with a more affordable price.

'Volkswagen Polo' Small Car Production Starts in India

The Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Ashok Chavan and Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, with responsibility of 'Group Production', formally rolled out Volkswagen India's first locally manufactured Polo from its plant in Chakan, Pune. Other honorable guests who graced the occasion with their presence were Shri. Rajendra J. Darda, Minister of Industries and Employment for state of Maharashtra, Shri. Sachin Ahir, State Minister of Industries and Housing Development as well as His Excellency Mr. Thomas Matussek, German Ambassador to India.
Volkswagen Polo IndiaSpeaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann said, "Today's start of production of our Polo is more than just the rollout of a car. It marks a milestone in our journey together into a successful future for the Volkswagen Group in India."

Since India is a strategic market for the Volkswagen Group and holds enormous potential for it, Prof. Heizmann added, "We aim to achieve a market share of eight to ten percent in the next four to six years with the three Volkswagen Group brands,
AudiSkoda, and Volkswagen by ambitious plans for India. We offer outstanding products, which will soon be joined in the market by another one - the Polo. These products - and in particular our Polo - will help us to increase our market share of this growing market significantly."

"The Polo is eagerly awaited here in India", he added "And quite rightly so, because our Polo stands for first-class German engineering and superior state-of-the-art technology. It is a young, fresh and cosmopolitan
car. We have aligned the current model systematically and uncompromisingly with our customers' expectations."

In Europe, the Volkswagen Polo has become the benchmark for the small car segment and has now created its own class - the Polo class. Volkswagen has received more than 130,000 orders since the new model was launched in May this year. The Volkswagen Polo has also been voted The Car of the Year - one of the oldest and most prestigious honors.

According to Prof. Heizmann, "Customers need to be convinced of the benefits of owning a
Volkswagen Group car and must want to buy it. Ultimately, the customer is a brand's best ambassador. We are dead certain that we will bring forward the European success story of our Polo to India."

Expressing his gratitude to the employees who shared the historical moment of the rollout together with there families, Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann stated: "Our employees worldwide ensure the high quality of our products with their skills and motivation. I am especially impressed with the abilities and the high level of commitment shown by the Indian staff we have recruited for our company. And we will continue to develop these skills of each and every employee by extensive ongoing training. Each individual will be put in the position to be able to build the best possible car."
Volkswagen India commemorated the rollout of the Polo with the first Family Day for the employees. According to Mr. Joerg Mueller, Volkswagen Group Chief Representative India and President & Managing Director Volkswagen India Private Limited, "This is the first time that Volkswagen has celebrated the rollout of a new model together with the families of its employees. The families of our employees are an integral part of Volkswagen's extended family."

The timeframe leading up to the official start of production of the Volkswagen Polo is unusual as it is only two years since the first construction work began at the Volkswagen Pune site. "Since then, we have made great efforts to implement optimal processes and achieve a level of quality that is the standard in every Volkswagen plant throughout the world. This was a major challenge", Mr. Mueller said. "Volkswagen is about more than just 'cars'. It embodies a unique style that gives its products - our
cars - a unique spirit", he further added.

The Pune plant is a key element in Volkswagen's India strategy. The scale of investment, commissioning local suppliers and employing people primarily from the region itself demonstrate Volkswagen's commitment to India. Volkswagen is making an important contribution to the economic development in the region and in the Indian economy in general.

The factory, which is one of the most state-of-the-art in the Volkswagen Group worldwide, has an annual capacity of around 110,000
cars. With a total volume of around €580 million, it is the largest investment to date by a German company in India. It is also the only plant operated by a German automaker in India that covers the entire production process - from the press shop, through body and paint shops, to assembly.

The processes in the new plant have been flexibly designed. Based on the current plans, this means Volkswagen will produce three different models - the Skoda Fabia since May 2009, the Volkswagen Polo Hatchback from now on and a saloon that will be launched in the second half of 2010.

The
Volkswagen Polo will reflect Volkswagen India's efforts to reach the highest possible degree of localization. Almost 50 percent localization has already been achieved with a target of around 80 percent within the next two to three years. This will enable Volkswagen India to offer cars at competitive prices and with a high level of quality.
