Hyundai's 'HED-6' concept car the ix-onic unveiled

Hyundai's 'HED-6' concept car, the ix-onic, unveiled at Geneva, previews the upcoming ix35 compact SUV, successor to the current Tucson.

Designed in Russelsheim, Germany, the ix-onic is described as an 'urban nomad', and 'inspired by multi-cultural personalities of cities like Berlin, Paris and London.' Don't expect it to go too far off-road, then, but it will have four-wheel-drive.

Finished in a high-tech high-contrast paint, the ix-onic shows off a new hexagonal grille design and LED daytime running lamps, set to feature on other upcoming Hyundai production cars.

It sits on 21" polished alloy wheels, and has unusual wedge-shaped side sills with aluminium trim, dual aluminium exhaust tailpipes and a curved, 3D Lexan plastic rear windscreen.

The ix-onic promises room for five, and is upholstered in cream-white leather with grey accents, ice-blue part-cashmere carpets and magnesium-effect trim.

Hyundai has fitted a top-quality sound system with high-mounted door speakers, and a rear-view mirror with a blind-spot warning system.

Power comes from Hyundai's new 175bhp turbocharged, direct-injection petrol engine (badged GDi), with stop-start system and a six-speed automated-manual gearbox. The ix-onic will emit just 149g/km of carbon dioxide.
