Hyundai wins 10 mpg with new direct-injection engine dubbed Theta II

Hyundai Theta II engine

Hyundai Motor Co. released on Tuesday direct-injection gasoline engine, meant to deliver a lot more power with better consumption economy. Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, Hyundai operates the world’s largest integrated automobile manufacturing facility in Ulsan, which is capable of producing 1.6 million units annually.

They have also been involved in some killer projects this past years, and along with the other members of the Big Asian Four (Toyota, Honda, Nissan) help better technology in the automotive industry.

The 2.4-liter engine, called the Theta II, will debut in the redesigned Sonata sedan, due in U.S. dealerships early next year, Hyundai said in a release.

It took Hyundai 4 fours and 147.4 million dollars to create, develop and finish this project. That also includes the plant that will make these engines. Quite costy, but the rewards are great – this might be a great step in taking the leadership in the fuel-efficient cars worlds. Even those that ignore the possibility of an electric vehicle surely care about mileage, at least cause it costs them loads of money these days if not out of responsibility.

During tests, Theta II deliverd 7 percent more torque at low revolutions and 12 percent more at the high end. That might mean around 8%-9% on the road as an average. Mileage is said to be improved by 10 percent, like we already said, declares with pride the South Korean maker. They managed this also by incorporating dual continuously variable valve timing to improve air intake and exhaust. This means the valves open for less time and less often, the result being more power and reduced emissions. Hyundai says it also reduced the weight of the crankshaft and catalytic converter, partly by using thinner steel. The overall weight is less because it doesn’t need to be more, heating is probably lower because of what we explained above hence the virtual possibility of using thinner material.
