BMW Group Argentina is introducing the new 3 series sedan. This new restyling increases the advantage to its rivals, merging elegance with an extraordinary performance, while preserving the agile and sportive character of the 3 series, now with a new powerful engine.
With the BMW 3 series, the virtues that have traditionally been a part of the German carmaker, such as its dynamic characteristics and agility, became a success in the mid-sized segment for the first time in history. The singular driving characteristics of this sports sedan have convinced testers from day one.
Along its five generations, the 3 series has pioneered technological progress, becoming an example followed by other members of the Premium segment. This new model presents new innovations, becoming an icon of technology, design and dynamics.
Our test unit, the 325i is positioned below the 335i and the 330i, but above the smallest member of the family, the 320i.
The 325i is an absolutely logical choice car for those seeking a Premium below a price tag of 60,000 dollars.
Its performance is more than satisfactory, as it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 7.6 seconds, reaching a max speed of 246km/h at 6.650 rpm. In sixth gear it can almost keep that speed, as it barely drops four or five kilometres per hour, but at a more relaxed level of 5.600 rpm.
If we analyze comfort equipment, we will notice the 325i has more than we can imagine. Our unit featured iDrive, Bluetooth connection, rain sensor, cruise speed control with brake assist, among a plethora of accessories.
The employees of BMW Argentina have noticed the lousy condition of our roads and our streets, fitting the new 325i with new 50m profile 16 inch tires, which drastically improve the comfort of the vehicle.
In many aspects, this new 325i shows the same virtues than its predecessors: an impeccable driving position, seats with excellent grip and a flawless engine that is very elastic after 1,500rpm.
The six speeds of its gearbox have an excellent ratio, even though it is rather slow. It has an average consumption if we bear the cylinder - power ratio in mind.
The stability and traction control can be unplugged, increasing the fun of driving. However, it will automatically reconnect at high-speed manoeuvres.
The safety equipment features six airbags (front, sides and window bags), ABS with pressure distribution, emergency brake, xenon lights and Isofix attachment points.
Speaking of security, we must note that the braking distance is below the 39 metres, thanks to a firm pedal.
Changes in the design. The front part of the new 3 series outlines the width of the car. The aesthetic of the double headlights , which is a distinctive element in all the models of the brand, is improved by tubular chromed elements.
The light rings, combined with bi-xenon optional headlights, can now be used as indicators during the day.
The rough lines predominate on the sides of the cars, which enhance the character of the vehicle. The cover of the boot has also been modified.
The back lights were split in two. They now are L shaped, following the trend of the brand. The parts of the back lights now have leds, which shows a defined aesthetic look and shows a superior quality.
Commenting on the comfort equipment, we can highlight the multipurpose steering wheel, mixed regulation seats, automatic two way acclimatizer, an efficient sound/speaker system, electric solar roof and iDrive system of multiple functions, which needs some time to get used to all its new functions.
It comes with iDrive. In the previous family, the iDrive was not available in Argentina. Now we can purchase this system that allows us to activate and control all the functions that come with the series equipment and optionals, which include entertainment, information, navigation and telecommunication. This new iDrive unit includes the additional function of voice command.
The Controller command allows us to control the CD player, radio, telephone and navigation system. It also has three keys for additional commands.
The navigator has a hard disk drive, which can store up to 80GB, and gives us a fast access to the digitalized maps of the navigation system, and can also store large number of songs. The system also allows users to download music from a CD, an MP3 or a USB memory to the hard drive.
The xDrive permanent transmission can be ordered in our country in the 325i and 335i models. The mechanism distributes power between the front and the back wheels according to the needs of the driver and the conditions of the road, providing an enhanced level of comfort, traction and agility.
The actions of the xDrive are regulated by the DSC stability control and the unit that controls the xDrive, both connected to the management network of the ICM body.
The xDrive contributes to improve the dynamic characteristics of this sedan, as the systm detects any overturns in advanced, compensating steering in adverse conditions. Meanwhile, there is also a new additional function of the DSC, which curbs the braking power and compensates the engines' par to improve the stability of the vehicle.
The new BMW 325i is seeking to beat the leader in the Premium segment, the Mercedes-Benz C200 K (184hp), with a price tag starting of 48,900 dollars.
The Audi A4, in its TFSI version, develops 160hp and is sold at 52,100 dollars, but it is not entirely comparable to the 325i because it is less powerful.
For its part, the 325i has a price of 53,900 dollars, with a much better equipment than the C class.
