Nano on comeback trail...Sales up 60% in December

Tata Motors' efforts to revive flagging sales of the Nano seem to be paying off if sales of the world’s cheapest car in December are any indication.

Tata Motors' move to double the warranty and easier financing lifted the sales of the Nano compact car to 5,784 last month from the paltry 509 units sold in November.

The December tally, a 60% increase from a year earlier, was below the 9,000 monthly sales record achieved in July 2010.
Tata Nano sales had slumped on a month-on-month basis since July as a spate of fire incidents coupled with price increases discouraged potential buyers.

Measures such as easy financing and the introduction of a Rs. 99 per month maintenance option seem to have reassured customers for now.

In December, Tata Motors extended warranties to four years or 60,000 kilometers, and added the maintenance plan besides unveiling the first ever television commercial for the
Tata Nano.

The company opened its Sanand factory in June last year with the capacity to build 250,000 Nanos a year.
