Montezemolo: Ferrari Unveiling 'Very Different' Model

Hybrids in Ferraris might sound like blasphemy--especially if you listen to their Formula 1 engineers--but despite all the moaning, the company has actually embraced the development of hybrid powertrains, seeing it as the road into the future of tight emissions controls. To that end, Luca de Montezemolo is forecasting a "very different" model introduction at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Last year saw the 599 HY-KERS concept debut in Geneva, and we expect this year's to follow along the same lines, but with the replacement for the 612 Scaglietti as the basis. A potent 6.0-liter V-12 engine paired with a 100-horsepower
hybrid electric system is expected, again, similar to the system shown on the 599 HY-KERS concept.

Emissions savings could reach 40 percent compared to the previous 612. The 612 is one of the first models due for a refresh in Ferrari's planned full-line revamp.

Expect a seven-speed F1-style dual clutch transmission, an evolutionary exterior design, and more customization and individualization options than you can shake a forest full of sticks at.

It's not yet clear if the 612 shown in Geneva will be a production model or a preview concept ahead of a full-production example to be shown later in 2011 for 2012
