Maruti to have production unit Gujarat

Maruti- India`s leading car manufacturer is planning on manufacturing Maruti cars in India and has considered setting up a production unit in Gujarat. The initiative will pose challenge to Tamil Nadu which is the current Detroit of India. The production unit is likely to be close to Sanand where 250,000 cars will be manufactured annually.

General Motors and Tata Motors already have their plant in Halol and Sanand respectively. As per reports, the proposed manufacturing unit will focus on Maruti Swift, Maruti A-Star and Maruti Estilo. At present, these cars are exported to Africa and Europe from Mundra port. About one Lakh units have already been exported from Mundra. Maruti has a full-fledged pre-dispatch section at this port. The capacity of the Manesar and Gurgaon plants of Maruti has capability of manufacturing 1.2 million units.

If sources are to be believed, a 500-acre plot has been finalized by Maruti India that is next to Sanand (Tata Motor’s Nano plant). Although there is no confirmed news on the purchase, Maruti Suzuki has sought for concessions similar to those that were granted to Tata Motors, when it shifted Nano plant from West Bengal to Gujarat. The location is believed to be the best as this place has direct road links with Kandla and Mundra ports.

According to sources, efforts are being made for clearing decks for Maruti so that it could open its plant closest to Sanand. Along with Maruti, tractor manufacturer John Deere, Car firms Peugeot and Ford are also looking for possibilities of opening their plants in Gujarat. Gujarat also has plants of Asia Motor works and Bombardier. Many manufacturers of auto components are also planning to set their shop in this region.
