Fiat planning to revive Dino small sports car with help from Lotus

As part of its model lineup expansion plan started in 2003, Fiat is reportedly now looking to revive its Dino two-door sports car with some help from the engineers over at Lotus Cars in Britain.

If you're scratching your head wondering why we called the Dino a Fiat and not a Ferrari, Fiat made the predecessor to the iconic Maranello sports car beginning in 1966. It never officially made it to our shores before its demise in 1973, though many have been personally imported.

According to Car, Fiat CEO Lorenzo Sistino wants to broaden his company's market appeal and has chosen to reenter the small two-seater roadster segment with experienced sports car builder, Lotus. Their agreement is said to allow Fiat to use the new Elise's componentry for its own, distinctly Italian version. The first Dino sports car was known for its stylish looks at a decent price, and with a little bit of help from Lotus, the upcoming model could also infuse a bit of road-holding performance to the mix.

Car estimates the Fiat Dino revival will hit European roads sometime in 2011.
