BMW Releases Fresh Information about the Upcoming EfficientDynamics Concept

For the past few weeks or so BMW has been teasing a new hybrid concept sports car dubbed the Vision EfficientDynamics. Now, BMW has finally unveiled the concept and offered the public some highly desired information regarding the new hybrid sports coupe.

Powering the new EfficientDynamics will be a 3 cylinder turbo diesel connected to both the wheels and a generator that will provide power to an set of electric motors. The electric motors will likely drive the wheels most of the time, with the diesel kicking in for more "spirited" driving circumstances and to recharge the onboard batteries.

The diesel will be a newly developed 1.5 liter inline-3, which could make its way into more of the BMW line up over the next few years. Power figures have been listed at 163 horsepower and 214lb/ft of torque.

Running alongside the small diesel engine will be a 33 horsepower electric motor offering a boost directly to the transmission as well as a more substantial 80 horsepower motor driving the front wheels. The total amount of power available to your right foot is listed as 356 ponies and 590 lb/ft of torque, although I'll admit that I'm not entirely sure where all that extra comes from.

Combined, the diesel engine and electric motor can propel the EfficientDynamics from 0 to 62mph in 4.8 seconds. This is also while returning an astonishing 62.6 miles per gallon. The EfficientDynamics will basically offer the same performance as a new M3 while still being very environmentally friendly.

Getting the power to the ground will be the job of the next generation dual clutch transmission being developed for the upcoming Z4 and M3. This specific transmission was selected not only for the better fuel economy, but also to keep the feel of the new hybrid as sporty as possible.

The concept is expected to make its first live appearance at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. Hopefully, some additional details will be available regarding possible production.
