Audi is warming up to electric cars by committing to the development of the E-Tron.
The gist is that Audi is finally coming around with the electric car. Audi unveiled its all electric super car E-Tron concept a few weeks ago at the Frankfurt Auto Show. It is now committing to it, due to overwhelming reactions.
After showing a less than positive enthusiasm for electric vehicles, EV, even outright bashing would be Volt buyers and EV adopters, the company announced it is committing to developing its E-Tron.
Developing The E-Tron? According to Electricnick, the news from Audi of America’s comes from Johan de Nysschen, who critiqued EV and Volt aficionados. The final version should make it in showrooms in 3 years, at the end of 2012.
Technically Speaking. The e-tron uses to the obligatory water-cooled lithium-ion battery pack, rated at 42.4 kW/h of usable energy and 53-kWh peak. The 4-in hub electric motors propel the EV for an estimated 154 miles. The combined torque is close to 3300 ft-lb, or 4.47 kN/m, and is split 70 percent to the rear, 30 percent to the front. The electric motors are rated at 230 kW, or 313hp. Of course, when it comes to EVs, the torque is more important than horsepower since 100 percent is available as soon as the motors move. 0 to 62 miles is achieved in 4.8 secs with an electronically limited top speed of 124 mph. Charging a depleted pack on 240 Volt will take 6 to 8 hours and a higher voltage charging, assuming Phase 3, would cut it down to 2.5 hours.
Audi manages to surprise us after its negative comments on EV feasibility, which just shows that once everyone had made up their mind that pure EVs are the way to go, even the more recalcitrant follow. Amazing Audi!
