Audi Plans to Develop the New A2 based on the A1

Audi is on its way to revive the A2 small car. This news was confirmed at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show. The new A2 shall find its slot between the already existing A1 and A3 mini cars that have been introduced at the Auto Show last week.
Audi’s CEO, Rupert Stadler, said “There’s clearly room for another product and another concept between the A3 and A1. …we gave the A1 that nomenclature (so) there’s clearly room for another product and another concept between the A3. If you don’t have to explain a car like the A2, then it works.”

Audi’s e-tron cars are being used to provide a basis for battery and electric-drive technology. Earlier, in Detroit Auto Show, Audi unveiled an e-tron sports car. In the Geneva Motor Show, Audi showed an e-tron A1 car. Audi plans to use the electric car model as a platform for future models.

The Audi A2 is said to be based on the A1 model which Audi showcased at the Geneva show, a media report says. It will have an unique styling and an electric powertrain. The original A2 was produced in Europe from late 1999 to 2005. It was a slow selling model, and was criticized for its styling and below-average performance.

According to German media, the Audi A2 is expected by 2014. No decision on the U.S. model has been made.
