2010 Audi S4 price starts from $45,900

The new 2010 Audi S4 gets a dramatic price cut, to go with a dramatically different take on performance under its hood.

The new S4 starts from $45,900--almost $12,000 less than the outgoing version's base price of more than $57,000. The car's been moved to the lower price to make it more attainable, Audi says. At the new price, it's more closely aligned with the twin-turbo editions of the BMW 3-Series.

Left unsaid: more marketing and engineering room for a new Audi RS4 with V-8 power and performance to rival the BMW M3 and Benz C63.

To reach its new price point--while also boosting the car's performance prowess--Audi's moved the S4 closer to the BMW 3-Series in drivetrain tech, too. The V-8 that powered the former S4 has been replaced by a new 333-horsepower supercharged V-6. The 3.0-liter's teamed to manual or dual-clutch transmissions. Audi says the quickest versions will accelerate to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds--faster than the old version--and gets an 18/27 mpg fuel economy rating from the EPA, a major uptick from the outgoing car's 13/20 mpg.

New features include the updated Audi MMI controller, Sirius real-time traffic data, and voice control for the navigation and other MMI systems.

Cars will be in showrooms later this month. We'll also bring your our first road test of the S4 later in the month. Until then, click over to our comprehensive vehicle pages for more 2010 Audi S4 photos, pricing information and news.
